Hospitals hired roughly 3,500 workers in September, a 0.1% increase, to bring total hospital employment to 4.67 million workers, preliminary Bureau of Labor Statistics figures show. That's compared with a 0.2% increase for the same month a year ago. All figures are seasonally adjusted. For the 12 months ended in September, hospital payrolls increased by about 129,300, or 2.8%. The prior year, hospital employment increased by 2.2%.
Physician offices added 4,700 employees last month, an increase of 0.2%, for a total of 2.29 million workers. In September 2007, physician-office employment rose by 0.3%. For the 12 months ended in September, doctors' offices added 68,500 workers, or a 3.1% change, compared with 2.6% for the prior year. -- by Melanie Evans
