John Desser, a former HHS official and aide to Republican presidential nominee John McCain, has been named vice president of public policy and government affairs for eHealth, a Mountain View, Calif.-based provider of an online health insurance brokerage service, the company announced.
According to a company news release, Desser will provide insight and expertise on healthcare reform to policymakers in Washington and to think tanks and other influencers, leveraging eHealth's strong understanding of the individual health insurance market.
Desser previously served as deputy assistant secretary for health policy in the assistant secretary's office for planning and evaluation at HHS, where he headed the affordable choices initiative to extend basic, affordable health insurance to the uninsured, the release stated.
According to the company, in 2003, Desser was involved in strategy to enact legislation that would promote health savings accounts. He has served as a legislative assistant to Rep. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) and served as a health policy aide to McCain, according to the release.
