Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C., has named John McConnell, M.D., as chief executive officer, putting one executive in charge of the hospital and the research and academic programs for the first time in its 86-year history. McConnell, 54, a urologist by training, is expected to start at Wake Forest by Nov. 1. He is leaving a position as executive vice president for health systems affairs at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. McConnell has been at UT Southwestern since 1980, when he began a four-year urology residency there. He has worked in various administrative jobs for the hospital and medical school and also has been a professor of urology since 1984. Wake Forest announced in March 2007 that it would restructure its governance to produce a single governing body led by a CEO.
