Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C., has named physician John McConnell as chief executive officer, putting one executive in charge of the hospital and the research and academic programs for the first time in its 86-year history. McConnell, 54, is expected to start at 783-bed Wake Forest by Nov. 1.
McConnell, a urologist by training, is leaving a position as executive vice president for health systems affairs at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. McConnell has been at 424-bed UT Southwestern since 1980, when he began a four-year urology residency there. He has worked in various administrative jobs for the hospital and medical school and also has been a professor of urology since 1984.
Wake Forest announced in March 2007 that it would restructure its governance to produce a single governing body led by a CEO. -- by Vince Galloro
