Sparrow Health System, Lansing, Mich., said it fired or disciplined employees for trying to obtain computerized medical information about the state's governor, Jennifer Granholm.
Sparrow spokesman John Berg told the Detroit Free Press the breach of Granholm's medical records was discovered during a routine audit at the 560-bed hospital. He said an unspecified number of employees were disciplined but wouldn't give details.
The 49-year-old Democratic governor underwent emergency surgery April 29 to remove an obstruction in her small intestine.
Berg said federal privacy laws forbid release of information about the incident.
Local nurses' union President Jeff Breslin said he can't divulge information about nurses who might have been disciplined.
