Cignas chief medical officer, Jeffrey Kang, has joined the health insurers executive leadership team and will report directly to the chairman and chief executive officer, H. Edward Hanway, so they can work together on external issues facing the healthcare industry. Cigna said the move will help the Philadelphia-based insurer actively contribute to and influence the healthcare reform debate and global policy discussion.
Kang, who has served as chief medical officer for Cigna HealthCare for the past six years, is responsible for the companys medical strategy and policy, such as evidence-based coverage decisions, benefit design, disease management, quality and incentives. Prior to joining Cigna, Kang was chief clinical officer for the CMS. He is also currently president of eHealth Initiative, a not-for-profit group that promotes health information technology. -- by Rebecca Vesely
