SILER CITY, N.C.UNC Health Care, Chapel Hill, N.C., said it has signed a letter of intent to acquire the assets of Chatham Hospital for $2 million in cash, plus a commitment to spend $9.3 million on services in Chatham County, N.C., over the next seven years. UNC has provided management support to the 25-bed critical-access hospital since 2006. UNC did not take on the hospitals $34.7 million in liabilities, which will continue to be funded by the hospitals operations. The Chatham Hospital board will continue to make decisions regarding hospital operations.
ARLINGTON, TexasHealthSouth Corp., Birmingham, Ala., said it has acquired a 30-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit at the Medical Center of Arlington from Columbia Medical Center of Arlington Subsidiary. The companies did not disclose financial terms of the deal. After the transaction is completed, which HealthSouth said it expects to happen in the third quarter of this year, the units operations will move to HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Arlington. HealthSouth operates 14 rehabilitation hospitals in Texas, and this acquisition will bring its Arlington locations total beds to 65, according to a spokesman for the company.
CONROE, TexasMechanicsburg, Pa.-based Select Medical Corp. said it will close its 46-bed long-term-care facility within the Conroe Regional Medical Center on July 31. Select will lay off 85 full-time employees who work at Select Specialty Hospital-Conroe, which has served as a hospital-within-a-hospital since it opened in June 2003. The company has nine Select Specialty hospitals in Texas, including three in the Houston area. Select is exploring whether the Conroe employees could work at one of these other facilities, said Carolyn Curnane, vice president of corporate communications at Select Medical. And if there isnt an internal opportunity, Curnane said, were helping them outside the company as well. Select was unable to renew its lease at Conroe Regional Medical Center, and exhausted all options before deciding to close its doors, Curnane said. The company does not have plans to open another long-term-care facility in the region.
