In the Spotlight
Lauf, 37, has left Wellmont Health Systems, Kingsport, Tenn., to follow Salluzzo to Cape Cod Healthcare, Hyannis, Mass. Salluzzo started this month as president and chief executive officer of two-hospital Cape Cod after more than three years in the same positions for Wellmont. Lauf first worked for Salluzzo in Pennsylvania, where Salluzzo was chief medical officer and CEO of Conemaugh Health System, Johnstown. Lauf became president and CEO of Miners Medical Center, Hastings, Pa., at the age of 30, and in 2004, was named to Modern Healthcares Up & Comers list (Sept. 20, 2004, p. 26). He subsequently was named the Star Student of the 2004 class in Modern Healthcares Up & Comers Yearbook (Sept. 17, 2007, p. 48).
More recently, Lauf was chief operating officer of Wellmonts Bristol (Tenn.) Regional Medical Center. He will be taking a step up as COO for the entire Cape Cod system. I absolutely feel that this experience that Im getting, plus the experience at other stops along the way, can definitely help fulfill a career goal of being a CEO of a hospital or health system like the Cape, Lauf said.
As at Conemaugh and Wellmont, Salluzzo and Lauf face significant financial challenges at Cape Cod. Were going to try to understand everything. Weve just started, Lauf said. Were going to look at every issue we have and pay attention to it. Nothing will be haphazard.
Meanwhile, Lauf and Salluzzos former employer is taking its time to find a replacement for Salluzzo. Wellmont named Michael Snow as its interim CEO, while the system continues its national search for a new chief, which is expected to take about six months. Snow is not a candidate for the position. He most recently was president and CEO of Surgical Care Affiliates, a spinoff of the surgical services division of HealthSouth Corp., Birmingham, Ala. Snow stepped down from his executive position there earlier this year but remains a director of the company.
