In response to Jean DerGurahian's "Commission issues warning on unprofessional behavior":
I believe the stance the Joint Commission is taking to require healthcare organizations to develop codes of conduct is an unfortunate but very necessary action, given the current state of affairs in many hospitals. While good manners should have been incorporated as a part of every childs home training and practiced in kindergarten, the conduct of many professionals has been less than satisfactory in the workplace and would certainly suggest otherwise.
Therefore, for the sake of our patients and those staff members who have been abused by a less-than-professional healthcare provider, particularly physicians, I am pleased to see that compulsory organizational polices will be required in an effort to reduce, if not eliminate, bad behavior. It is long overdue.
