The Federal Trade Commission announced that federal antitrust authorities dont plan to challenge a proposed merger of two-hospital Sun Health Corp., Sun City, Ariz., and 19-hospital Banner Health, which is based in Phoenix and has eight hospitals in the state.
The systems announced in September that they had signed a letter of intent. They applied for antitrust clearance in November, receiving the green light six months after a second request from the FTC for information about the deal.
Sun Healths two hospitals, 274-bed Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital and 336-bed Boswell Hospital, both in Sun City, are located in the fast-growing area of Maricopa County known as the Northwest Valley, as is Banner Healths 374-bed Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale. Catholic Healthcare West last year announced it purchased 45 acres for an eventual hospital in Surprise, Ariz., about five miles from Del E. Webb Memorial.
In response to queries about how the deal will move forward, Banner e-mailed a joint statement: We are now working very hard to complete the activities leading up to the joining of our organizations. More information will be provided in coming days including a specific date in which these activities should be completed." -- by Gregg Blesch
