A Massachusetts health information organization, or HIO, has been launched serving the healthcare community centered in Newburyport, the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative announced.
The HIO, called Wellport, was developed with the assistance of electronic information technology vendor Wellogic, Cambridge, Mass., and is based on the ability to communicate a shared health summary between 138 participating clinicians in 39 medical practices, and will soon include 143-bed Anna Jaques Hospital, Newburyport. Other features, including a patient portal, will be added later this year, the news release said.
Wellport is one of three HIOs in an electronic health-record pilot program through the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative and funded by $50 million from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, according to J.B. Sweeney, spokeswoman for the collaborative, which was founded in 2004 by Massachusetts physicians to promote healthcare IT.
There are two other community HIOs in the pilot, North Adams, with 60 clinicians, that has already gone live, and Brockton, with 356 clinicians, which will go live soon, according Sweeney. The collaborative is providing subsidies for physicians hardware, software and technical support during the pilot program, she said.
