Duke University Health System, Durham, N.C., said it has appointed William Fulkerson Jr., a 25-year veteran of the system, to the position of senior vice president of clinical affairs for the three-hospital system, effective July 1. The systems hospital CEOs and the outpatient services division will report to Fulkerson.
Fulkerson, 56, has been chief executive officer of Duke University Hospital, Durham, since April 2002. Kevin Sowers, chief operating officer of the hospital, has been named interim CEO, also effective July 1, while a national search for a full-time successor is conducted.
Fulkerson joined Duke University as an assistant professor of medicine in 1983. He has held several leadership positions within both the school of medicine and the hospital system since then. Fulkersons specialties are pulmonary and critical-care medicine. -- by Vince Galloro
