Physicians at the American Medical Associations annual meeting in Chicago voted to support an AMA proposal to cover the uninsured and to study the impact of free clinics on improving access to healthcare for the uninsured.
While we work to cover the uninsured, we need to find ways to care for those in need now, said AMA board member Cyril Hetsko. The AMA will be looking into ways free clinics can fill the void for uninsured patients until we can get everyone covered. In conjunction with its annual meeting, the AMA posted billboards around Chicago as part of its Voice for the Uninsured campaign, the AMAs three-year effort to spur action to cover Americas uninsured.
Two new campaign television ads were also unveiled at the meeting and will air across the country this fall. In addition, the AMA distributed new informational packets about its proposal to cover the uninsured and launched a newly updated campaign Web site voicefortheuninsured.org. -- by Jennifer Lubell
