It is with great honor that the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, and our members, recognize the recipients of the 2008 CEO IT Achievement Award, co-sponsored by Modern Healthcare and HIMSS.
Focused on the patient
Honorees used technology to help coordinate care
These three healthcare executives demonstrate that the strategic implementation of health information technology and management systems defines not only part of who they are, but also, what their organizations represent nowand in the future.
As leaders of their organizations, these CEOs have achieved successful adoption of the electronic medical record, an accomplishment that both supports and contradicts the recent report from the Congressional Budget Office, Evidence on the Costs and Benefits of Health Information Technology. This report states that health IT appears to make it easier to reduce health spending if other steps in the broader healthcare system are also taken to alter incentives to promote savings.
By itself, the adoption of more health IT is generally not sufficient to produce significant cost savings.
Despite the slower-than-desired adoption of health IT, healthcare organizations have successfully made this transition, including the 15 recipients to date of the CEO IT Achievement Award. Their profiles in this publication detail the philosophy and the ongoing pursuit of organizational excellence that these CEOs represent. They focused on improving patient care by enhancing coordination among their cliniciansand all staff members.
Technology helped them reach that goal by reducing inefficiency and improving patient safety and quality. These CEOs took a collaborative, rather than an IT-standalone approach to health IT implementation.
The primary goal for these CEOs and their healthcare organizations is better patient care. The effective transition demands an integrated review of how a healthcare organization operates before, during and after implementation of the EMR.
The three recipients of this award have shown us that health IT helps to enable transparency in the delivery of healthcare and improve the health of the communities these CEOs serve.
Once again, congratulations to the recipients of the 2008 CEO IT Achievement Award. They will be recognized at the HIMSS Summit during the general session on June 9 at the Renaissance Washington D.C. Hotel.
I hope to see you there.
HIMSS president and CEO
