Minnesota will require all electronic health records to be certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology, and hospitals, pharmacies and other providers must adopt electronic prescribing by 2011, under recently passed legislation. In a bill sent to Gov. Tim Pawlenty, lawmakers mandated e-prescribing standards for anyone who prescribes, dispenses or transmits benefit information.
The law requires providers, group purchasers, prescribers and dispensers to use either Health Level 7 or National Council for Prescription Drug Programs standards for internal information and the NCPDP standards for external communication. Pawlenty has not yet taken action on the bill.
