Physicians and hospitals will have access to patients Medicare benefit and eligibility information through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigans Web portal beginning this summer, the insurer announced.
Providers already have access to data for patients enrolled in Medicaid and the companys various plans; the addition of Medicare information means doctors will have immediate access to data on the vast majority of insured patients in Michigan, the company said in a news release. Blue Cross initially piloted the Medicare service in March.
Adding more patient information through the portal also furthers the states initiative to foster a health information exchange, according to the insurer. Blue Cross in Michigan expects to process 270 million transactions in 2008, with its Web portal picking up another 90 million transactions or inquiries. More than 30,000 healthcare professionals in the state access the portal, the insurer said.
