Twenty-six members of Northeast Ohio Cardiovascular Specialists, known as NEOCS, have joined the growing ranks of Summa Physicians, a subsidiary of 486-bed Summa Health System, Akron, Ohio. Cliff Deveny, president of Summa Physicians, said in a news release that the group was drawn to NEOCS by a shortage of cardiologists in the region, while William Bauman, NEOCS corporate executive board co-chairman, said Summas resources will help recruit and retain talent. NEOCS was formed in 2007 as a merger between the Heart Group and Akron Cardiology Consultants. Under a contract, 26 of 30 NEOCS physicians became employed members of Summa Physicians, while the remaining four have chosen to part ways. NEOCS, meanwhile, will continue to exist as a separate organization and employ the nonphysician staff. Summa Health System owns four hospitals in and around Akron and in March sealed an agreement to assume ownership of an affiliated hospital. A sixth hospital is a Summa member under a joint-operating agreement.
