Medicare released for the first time volume and payment information for selected conditions as well as the results of its new Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, or HCAHPS, survey on the HHS-run Hospital Compare Web site for consumers.
Medicare, the largest healthcare payer, will now post payment and volume information for certain select conditions. The data show how often Medicare patients were admitted to hospitals for those conditions and what Medicare paid for related treatments. Consumers also can read what patients thought of their hospital experiences. The site already reports hospitals process and outcome measures results for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical-care measures. Data are updated quarterly.
More than 2,500 hospitals participated in the initial HCAHPS release, a number that is expected to grow, according to the Hospital Quality Alliance. More than 3,000 hospitals are expected to be included in the next report, and roughly 4,300 hospitals already submit the process and outcome data that appear on the site, a spokeswoman said.
