A longtime ambulatory surgery center in Northwest Indiana announced its becoming a physician-owned hospital, with a celebration scheduled for March 11 to re-christen Calumet Surgery Center as Surgical Hospital of Munster.
Thirty physician investors are among 67 who practice at the nine-bed hospital, several of whom have offices in the adjacent Hammond Clinic. Regent Surgical Health, a Westchester, Ill.-based developer, is a minority partner.
Patients receive superior care, physicians experience more control over patient care, the community gains economic growth and other community healthcare facilities improve their performance because patients have more choices, investor and board member Cynthia Sanders said in a news release. Sanders also is a managing partner and medical director of the Hammond Clinic, and she is among several Hammond Clinic physicians who invested in a new, nearby joint-venture with Sisters of St. Francis Health Services, 63-bed Franciscan Physicians Hospital, Munster, last November. -- Gregg Blesch
