Regarding John Mitchells The hard work of culture :
When I was working in hospitals, the cultural changes that we put in place around a professional governance and practice model in the nursing division was evidence of the thoughts expressed by John Mitchell. I called it Empowerment is Exponential because we realized much more significant outcomes and achievements than we had in a more traditional organizational structure. As staff assumed ownership of their work and held themselves and peers accountable for the quality of that work, we increased our organizational effectiveness in financial, operational and clinical terms.
Key to this level of accountability was clear delineation of scope of responsibility and then ensuring commensurate levels of authority so staff could be held accountable. Too often we give responsibility and expect accountability but then do not give the authority needed to manage the work. When we do, it is the most satisfying experience for both management and staff.
