Hospital employment climbed to 4.6 million in February, with 16,500 workers joining payrolls last month, an increase of 0.4%, according to seasonally adjusted figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. All figures are preliminary. In the 12-month period ended in February, hospitals hired 120,600 workers, a 2.7% jump and the largest numerical 12-month gain since the year ended in October 2001, when hospitals also added 120,600 workers.
Physician office employment totaled 2.3 million last month, gaining 9,200 workers in February, a 0.4% increase, the bureau said. For the 12-month period ended in February, physician offices hired 74,900 workers, or a 3.4% increase. The yearly numerical gain was the largest for physician offices since August 2001, when offices added 78,300 workers. -- by Melanie Evans
