The Breakaway Group has expanded its advisory board with five new members, including the chief information officer of San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare and two veterans of HealthSouth Corp.
The Denver-based consulting firm, which helps healthcare providers adopt new technology and equipment, announced the board has welcomed William Spooner, John Markus, R. Greg Brophy, Robert Frist Jr., and Howard Block.
Spooner is senior vice president and CIO of Sharp HealthCare, an integrated system that owns or operates four general acute-care hospitals. Spooner, who joined Sharp in 1981, has directed the planning and implementation of information technology across the system.
Markus, now counsel with the law firm Balch & Bingham, previously was executive vice president and chief compliance officer for HealthSouth. Markus joined HealthSouth in 2004 and implemented its federally monitored compliance program, a condition of the company's agreement with the U.S. Justice Department settling allegations of Medicare fraud. Brophy also was in the executive ranks of HealthSouth, serving as president of its diagnostic division before it was sold to the Gores Group last year.
Frist, nephew of HCA's Thomas Frist Jr., is chairman, president and chief executive officer of HealthStream, a Nashville provider of healthcare research and learning systems. Block is managing director of Knowledge Investment Partners.
