The Baylor Health Care System in Dallas was named the recipient of the National Quality Forums 2008 National Quality Healthcare Award. The 15th annual award recognizes a healthcare organization that successfully uses performance measures to drive quality improvement in patient care.
We are honored to receive this very prestigious award from the National Quality Forum, said Joel Allison, Baylors president and chief executive officer in a written statement. At Baylor, our healthcare team is continuously working to develop innovative, evidence-based protocols that positively impact the health of our patients and our community.
Baylor operates 11 hospitals; its flagship is 930-bed Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Janet Corrigan, the NQFs president and CEO, said the NQFs 11-member award jury was deeply impressed with Baylor, and felt that the system stood out as an exemplary model for raising the bar of health system performance.
At deadline, the number of nominees for the 2008 award was unavailable. The jury chose Baylor out of a pool of finalists; the finalists identities were unknown to the jury.
In 2005, Allison received Modern Healthcares CEO IT Achievement Award, which is co-sponsored by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
The NQF, the Washington-based quality standards consensus building organization, conducts the award program in partnership with Modern Healthcare and the Studer Group. The National Committee for Quality Health Care previously handed out the award from 1994 through 2006.
The NQF took over the award in 2007 after it and the National Committee merged and restructured the award process.
Last years recipient of the National Quality Healthcare Award was HealthPartners, the Bloomington, Minn.-based integrated delivery system (March 5, 2007, p. 36).
Modern Healthcare will profile Baylor and its quality-improvement efforts in a special feature to be published in the May 12 issue. The NQF will honor Baylor at a dinner in Washington on May 15. For more information on the event, visit the NQFs Web site at qualityforum.org.
