Florida Gov. Charlie Crist proposed repealing the states certificate-of-need law for acute-care hospitals to increase competition and efficiency in the healthcare marketplace, according to a plan included in the governors fiscal 2009 budget. The proposal suggests licensing as an alternative to Floridas CON law, but provides few details.
Calls to Crists office were not returned at deadline. The top official at Floridas Agency for Health Care Administration, which oversees the states CON applications, made a similar proposal to reporters in November 2007, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
Spokesman Fernando Senra said today the agency had not yet drafted any potential legislation to abolish Floridas CON. At this point its just a proposal, he said. -- by Melanie Evans
