AmeriChoice, a unit of Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group, said it intends to acquire Unison Health Plans to enhance the scale and scope of its government-sponsored plans.
Unison, based in Pittsburgh, provides public-sector plan coveragesuch as Medicaid, Medicare Special Needs and the State Childrens Health Insurance Programto about 370,000 people through a network of 28,000 healthcare providers. Together, AmeriChoice and Unison would serve more than 2 million people across 20 states, including Unisons operations in Delaware, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Our capabilities will be enhanced by AmeriChoices experience and UnitedHealth Groups many resources and innovations in healthcare delivery, said John Blank, Unisons president and chief executive officer, in a written statement.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and the acquisition is expected to close by mid-2008. -- by Rebecca Vesely
