Hospitals added about 9,700 workers in December, a one-month increase of 0.2%, to roughly 4.59 million employees, according to seasonally adjusted, preliminary figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2007, hospitals added around 115,500 to payrolls, a 2.6% gain and the largest 12-month increase since the year ended in January 2002.
Physician offices hired roughly 3,800 employees in December, also a 0.2% increase, to bring the total to 2.26 million workers, the preliminary figures show. In 2007, physician offices added 74,200 workers, a 3.4% increase. -- by Melanie Evans
