The National Committee for Quality Assurance is conducting a public comment period for a proposed set of initial standards related to Medicare special needs plans.
The standards are part of an initial strategy to evaluate the structure, processes and performance of special needs plans, according to the NCQA, which is working with the CMS on the proposed standards. Special needs plans are a type of Medicare plan to focus on particularly vulnerable groups of beneficiaries, such as elderly with several chronic health problems.
Participants can review the standards and submit comments through Jan. 18, 2008. NCQA will review the comments and provide proposed final standards to the CMS in March. The CMS will have final requirements and data collection tools available to special needs plans in mid-April.
