Joshua Kugler, M.D., was named senior vice president and chief medical officer at the South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, N.Y. Kugler, 38, had been serving as interim medical director since January 2007, and he replaces Akram Boutros, M.D., who was named executive vice president and chief administrative officer at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center, Roslyn, N.Y. earlier this year. In addition to his CMO post, Boutros was also the chief operating officer and executive vice president of South Nassau Communities Hospital. Kugler, chairman of the South Nassau department of emergency medicine and co-chair of its ethics committee, also serves on the State Department of Health advisory committee and the American College of Emergency Physicians professional development committee. Previously, Kugler was the associate director of emergency medicine at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, N.Y., and he also worked at hospitals in Florida, Maryland, Mississippi and Virginia. He served in the U.S. Navy for nine years, finishing with the rank of lieutenant commander. Kugler earned his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh, and received a Master of Science in health management from Harvard University.
