[00:00:27.09] Martopia Voice Talent: Today we are speaking with Andy Stern, president of Service Employees International Union. Mr. Stern, how are you today?
[00:00:35.27] Andrew Stern: I'm great, thanks.
[00:00:37.05] Martopia Voice Talent: Can you tell us what your reaction is to being named to the ranking of the 100 most powerful people in healthcare by readers of Modern Healthcare magazine?
[00:00:44.18] Andrew Stern: It was really an honor to be recognized, but not really for me, but for people like Lisa Scott [ph], a woman I met who lost her child and marched with me across the Golden Gate Bridge because she was unable to get the tests she needed for her child to be able to diagnose her illness. For the mother I met whose child enlisted in the army to go to Iraq, in order that he was able to have healthcare. This is a recognition that it's time in America for every man, woman, and child to be able to have the security and comfort of knowing they have healthcare that's quality and affordable and can't be taken away. And so it's an honor for me, but more important, a recognition that the time has come for universal healthcare in America.
[00:01:25.15] Martopia Voice Talent: What is the biggest issue facing healthcare today?
[00:01:26.17] Andrew Stern: Well, America has two big problems. One is we really don't have a healthcare system, we have a healthcare sector. It's not coordinated. People don't have access to the best medicine available anywhere in the world. And the second is we have an economic problem in our country; most people can't afford healthcare. And equally importantly, we are the only country on earth that puts the price of healthcare on the cost of our products, and tries to compete against countries around the world that don't. This is not only a moral crisis now, but an economic crisis as well, and I think we need to solve that, and solve that right now.
[00:01:58.20] Martopia Voice Talent: How are you trying to wield your power or influence to address that issue.
[00:02:05.27] Andrew Stern: Well, if we're going to solve our healthcare crisis, it's not going to be about democrats or republicans or left and right. It's really about doing what's right for America, and so we at SEIU have been working with leaders in the corporate community-Intel, AT&T and Wal-Mart. We formed a coalition with [unclear], with a business round table, AARP, and the National Federation of Independent Businesses, because we understand that to solve America's healthcare crisis takes all of us working together; this is not a partisan issue or a political issue. It's a human issue that America needs to come together and solve right now. And we're doing everything we can to build the new partnerships and new understandings that allow that to happen.
[00:02:49.02] Martopia Voice Talent: Well Mr. Stern, we do thank you for your energy and passion, as this is something that we will all feel the effects of. I'd like to thank you for joining us.
[00:02:55.28] Andrew Stern: Thank you, and thank Modern Healthcare.
