John Thorner has been appointed to the new position of executive vice president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, a 41,000-member organization based in Park Ridge, Ill. He starts Jan. 7.
Thorner, 56, is an attorney and former journalist with extensive experience in association management. Most recently, he was the executive director of the National Recreation and Park Association, Ashburn, Va., and Washington; and he also held that position for the Optical Society of America, Washington; and the Air and Waste Management Association, Pittsburgh, a news release said.
As a journalist, Thorner wrote for the Associated Press, Atlanta Constitution, Legal Times and Washington Post. As an attorney, he worked for the National Labor Relations Board during the Carter administration and was an environmental counsel for the American Paper Institute and National Forest Products Association.
He sits on the board of the American Society of Association Executives, and has previously been a board member for the American Institute of Physics and the American Association of Engineering Societies. -- by Andis Robeznieks
