Until a year ago, St. John Health in Warren, Mich., had been using approximately 75 full-time equivalents of agency nurses. Now the seven-hospital system, which has 2,340 licensed beds, is out of the agency business, having started whats essentially an internal nursing agency.
Weve really done a complete swap-out, says Nini Coury, corporate manager of the system staffing office. In addition to cost savings of $2.1 million, this FlexChoice program has had soft benefits, she says.
We have a consistent, cohesive medical team, with a 3% turnover rate, she says. What weve heard from our nurses, almost without exception, is that the thing that keeps them the most satisfied is the ability to drive their schedule. We are able to provide that.
