The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has named co-chairs and members for two work groups organized to create consensus-based definitions and context of use for five healthcare IT termselectronic health record, electronic medical record, personal health record, health information exchange and regional health information organization.
The Records Work Group will be co-chaired by John Haughom, senior vice president of clinical quality and patient safety for PeaceHealth; and Donald Mon, vice president of practice leadership at American Health Information Management Association. The Networks Work Group will be overseen by William Bernstein, chairman of the healthcare division of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips; and Pamela Matthews, senior director business information systems at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
The groups are being formed out of a contract with technology and management consultant BearingPoint, McLean, Va., to develop consensus definitions for the initials and acronyms often used interchangeably in the healthcare industry but are occasionally argued over by IT specialists.
The records group will focus on defining EHR, EMR and PHR. The networks group is charged with defining a RHIO and an HIE.
