[00:00:28] Martopia Voice Talent: Today we are speaking with Dr. Richard Salluzzo, president and CEO of Wellmont Health System. Dr. Salluzzo is one of the 100 most powerful people in healthcare voted by readers of Modern Healthcare magazine. Hello, Dr. Salluzzo, welcome and thank you for joining us.
[00:00:45] Richard Salluzzo: My pleasure, thank you for having me, Laura.
[00:00:48] Martopia Voice Talent: What is your reaction to being named one of the most 100 powerful people in healthcare by readers of Modern Healthcare magazine?
[00:00:55] Richard Salluzzo: Well, Im surprised, this is the first time Ive ever achieved this award. And, of course, Im honored. But most importantly its very helpful promoting the issues in which I firmly believe need to be center stage. So I look at it in a pragmatic way thats maybe going to allow people to listen to me because of this distinction and hear what I have to say about some of the things that I think are important in terms of healthcare change.
[00:01:22] Martopia Voice Talent: Dr. Salluzzo, can you tell me what you think the biggest issue facing healthcare today is?
[00:01:27] Richard Salluzzo: Well, I do believe its our management of safety and outcomes in patient care, though reimbursement is so interlined with the safety issue that I believe the reimbursement system needs to change significantly if were going to attain some of the safety goals that we need to.
[00:01:43] Martopia Voice Talent: And how are you trying to wield your power of influence to address that issue?
[00:01:46] Richard Salluzzo: Well, specifically in terms of safety Ive been a part of safety health alliance with Novant Health System and Venta Health System and Wellmont Health System. Were really defining what safety is. Were taking a lot of the outcomes desired from ARC, CMS, Leapfrog, IHI and other groups that are defining desired outcomes. And were putting kind of how-to templates, steps that are needed to reach those outcomes, and then we measure compliance, for instance, for falls. We have six or seven steps that we require to kind of eliminate falls. Were trying to get to zero defects. Now, if the staff is compliant we think 95% of the time with these evidence-based air-free templates we believe will reduce our falls dramatically, and weve reduced them dramatically from 4.5 falls per thousand days down to around one. But nobody wants to fall, so we kind of want to eliminate falls all together. Weve developed these templates for the top 70 outcomes that are desired, whether it be in diminished falls, diminished med airs, better door to balloon times. And what we hope to do is create a certification process. Jayco is on our advisory board. Hopefully create an accreditation process that if you meet a certain percentage of compliance, say, 90% with these air-free templates, you get the safety designation. And its sort of a template that were developing, trialing, creating and that way the smaller hospitals that dont have experts [unintelligible], dont have the resources will have a ready-made template on how to kind of improve safety in their organization.
[00:03:25] Martopia Voice Talent: Well, again, thank you so much, Dr. Salluzzo, for joining us today.
[00:03:29] Richard Salluzzo: Thank you very much, Laura.
