Mercy Health System, Janesville, Wis., and Sharp HealthCare, San Diego, are among five recipients of the 2007 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, a top presidential honor for organizational performance excellence.
Both facilities won in the healthcare category. Michael Murphy, Sharp's president and chief executive officer, is a 2007 Modern Healthcare/HIMSS CEO IT Achievement Award winner.
The Baldrige winners were chosen from 84 applicants who underwent about 1,000 hours of evaluation in seven areas: leadership; strategic planning; customer and market focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; workforce focus; process management; and results, according to a news release by the U.S. Commerce Department. In its 20th year, the award program is managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
The other winners are: Pro-Tec Coating Co., Leipsic, Ohio, the City of Coral Springs, Fla., and the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center, Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. The recipients will receive their awards in a Washington ceremony early next year.
