Charles Friedman has been named deputy national coordinator for health IT in HHS’ Office of National Coordinator for Health IT.
Friedman served previously as senior adviser to Robert Kolodner, national coordinator for health IT. Prior to joining ONCHIT, Friedman was institute associate director for research informatics and information technology at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. He also established a center for biomedical informatics during his time as professor and associate vice chancellor for biomedical informatics at the University of Pittsburgh.
Friedman, whose academic endeavors focused on how to build IT resources to support healthcare, research and education, will be responsible for initiatives to develop, maintain and direct ONCHIT’s plan for nationwide adoption of interoperable healthcare IT, the office said in a news release. -- by Jean DerGurahian
