Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin announced that the commission will be awarding up to $400 million in grants over the next three years to help expand healthcare connectivity in rural and underserved areas. The FCC hopes to provide connectivity for 6,000 providers such as hospitals, clinics, rural health centers and mental health facilities in 42 states.
The grants will pay up to 85% of a grant applicant’s cost to deploy broadband connectivity, according to Martin, speaking in Chicago at a public meeting of the American Health Information Community during the American Medical Informatics Association’s annual symposium.
