The CMS launched a Web site to provide all necessary information for hospitals reporting hospital-acquired conditions and present-on-admission indicators.
The site outlines the background of the new present-on-admission regulation and explains what information hospitals need to submit as well as the proper codes. There is also a list of facilities exempt from the regulation and categories of hospital-acquired conditions.
Beginning in October, hospitals receiving the CMS reimbursement were required to submit present-on-admission indicators in their reimbursement claims. The CMS will review submitted data from Jan. 1, 2008, to March 31, 2008, and provide feedback to hospitals if there are any errors in how they turned in claims. During this time, hospitals will not be penalized for reporting errors; however, starting on April 1, 2008, claims submitted without proper present-on-admission information will be returned, according to the CMS Web site.
