[00:00:28] Martopia Voice Talent: Today we are speaking with Dick Clarke, president and CEO of Healthcare Financial Management Association. Dick, welcome.
[00:00:36] Richard Clarke: Thank you, Laura; glad to be with you.
[00:00:38] Martopia Voice Talent: I want to know what your reaction is to being named to the ranking of the 100 most powerful people in healthcare by readers of Modern Healthcare magazine.
[00:00:46] Richard Clarke: Well, clearly, its an honor to be recognized by the readership of such a prestigious magazine. Its a very broad-based readership of key people, and so obviously its an honor to be recognized. But I also think it recognizes the good work that HFMA as an organization does and the work that its members do. And thats very gratifying to me. Ive been a member of the association for 35 years, and Ive been 21 years as its president, so it feels good.
[00:01:13] Martopia Voice Talent: What do you think is the biggest issue facing healthcare today?
[00:01:17] Richard Clarke: Well, I think the biggest issue is trust. And that can be looked at in a whole variety of different ways. Trust in the way that we provide care to patients and to the community; trust that was provided in a safe and high quality way. Trust that we will have the best interest of the patients in mind in that its all about the mission and the margin and not just the margin. And were not just in the business of providing healthcare, but rather were in the mission of providing healthcare. And then, finally, the trust that we can be effective managers of the resources that are entrusted to us. That level of trust and from the community, trust from policymakers, trust from our patients, trust from our employees I think are really key issues.
[00:02:02] Martopia Voice Talent: How are you trying to wield your power or influence to address that issue?
[00:02:06] Richard Clarke: Well, you know, as a person in a position like I have with a major association and being recognized by Modern Healthcare I think has an obligation to use that as a bold republic [ph]. And so what I do is in my speeches and in my writings I try to focus on this idea of building trust, of making the right decisions for the right reasons. And Im a finance guy, and often times look at things from a financial standpoint. But I think its key for even finance people to understand that its not just about the margin, its also about the mission. So what I talk about is how to build trust in the community, how to make sure that the decisions that are being made, both from a business standpoint and from a mission standpoint, are being made with the patients best interests at heart; that theyre being made with an understanding that the community and patients are entrusting us with their care and, in many cases, with their lives.
One last thing if I could just point out that we are very involved in something called patient-friendly billing. And in that project were helping organizations, primarily hospitals, understand consumerism and how consumerism has an impact on the message and the processes that healthcare organizations use and the methods by which they price their service. We recently released two different reports, one on consumerism and one on pricing that really got at those issues.
[00:03:30] Martopia Voice Talent: Well, you certainly are a finance guy with a passion for human interests, and I want to thank you, Dick, for spending some time with us today.
[00:03:36] Richard Clarke: Thank you, Laura.
