Howard Kern, Sentara Healthcares president and chief operating officer, will not step down to succeed Samuel Wallace, 64, as president and chief executive officer of Iowa Health System.
Kern has opted to remain at Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara because of significant family considerations, the health system said in a written statement. Kern, 50, was named as Wallace's successor in September and was scheduled to join Des Moines-based Iowa Health in January. Iowa Health said in a written statement that its search committee will meet within a week to evaluate options and determine a course of action.
In a written statement, Don Ross, the Iowa Health system board chairman, said: I am confident that the search committee and the board will act swiftly to find a successor to Sam Wallace. -- by Melanie Evans
