The Massachusetts Hospital Association added two quality measurespatient falls and injury-causing fallsto a list of publicly reported quality indicators, and it announced plans to release data on bed sores by year-end.
The hospital-specific fall data, collected between October 2006 and March 2007, was voluntarily reported and published on a Web site that also posts nurse staffing data and CMS quality measures.
The Burlington, Mass.-based MHA said once reporting on pressure sores begins, the Web site www.patientsfirstma.org will include six quality measures that the National Quality Forum has identified as being affected by the quality of nursing care.
Rich Copp, a spokesman for the association, said the group is unaware of any other state with similar voluntary reporting on falls. Data will be updated quarterly, he said. Massachusetts hospitals reported 4,573 falls and 1,005 falls with injuries during the six-month period, he said. -- by Melanie Evans
