What a blessing it has been to share my life with these wonderful pets. The love, commitment and loyalty they give you in return for a little bit of caring amounts to probably the best bargain that man could ever make.
It is why when I read about people who are involved in dogfighting, I am more than disturbed. These people not only train dogs to kill other dogs, but they also wind up killing other canines that dont fight hard enough, sometimes by hanging them and even torturing them. Its hard even to type those words. I get so angry even contemplating the kind of person who would be involved in such a thing.
Some people try to defend dogfighting by saying it is part of their culture. I say they need to change their culture if it is so depraved. This practice does not belong in our country or anywhere else, for that matter. Its just that simple.
Political correctness tells us to be tolerant of those who live differently, and Ill buy that reasoning to a certain extent. But in the case of dogfighting or of cruelty to any animal, I think we are enabling the people who engage in those acts by saying it is cultural. All of us who care should speak up and say we wont stand for this kind of behavior nor will we condone these bums who enjoy watching animals fight and tear each other apart in the name of sport.
I wonder what all the dogs would have to say, the ones that are in heaven waiting for their former owners to join them so that they can once again give their loyalty and trust and love to the one they looked to for security and love from puppyhood. I wonder how much they would think of us if we simply turned our backs and ignored the whole thing.
Some people do that every day because they dont want to take a stand on anything for fear of offending someone. This is one of those issues where standing on the sidelines just wont cut it. If we care about the beings with whom we share this earth, we cant stand idly by as something this heinous is occurring.
