Judges praised the site plan of this project that links the University of Vermont College of Medicine and the new 550,000-square-foot Fletcher Allen Health Care ambulatory-care center with a new 70,000-square-foot medical education center and underground library.
While one judge says it seems a little extravagant for Vermont, another comments that the project is low-key and doesnt shout at you.
This is really phase one of an orderly replacement process, says Rick Kobus, senior principal with Cambridge, Mass.-based Tsoi, Kobus & Associates, adding that the campus basically had consisted of buildings strung together in chronological order dating back to the 1860s.
Kobus says the layout uses views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack and Green mountains to orient visitors. Youre reminded where you are with those reference points.
