Looking at pictures of the Arizona Cancer Centers new outpatient Peter and Paula Fasseas Cancer Clinic at University Medical Center North, there is no mistaking its location. It is unmistakably the Southwest desert.
That was the intent, says Stephen Yundt, the healthcare principal at Los Angeles-based CO Architects and the principal in charge of designing the University of Arizona-affiliated Tucson cancer center.
The centers gardens, which feature native plants that are organized around a creek bed, are designed to provide views of the mountains and rugged desert scenery. Exterior materials include stone and plaster that relate to the natural landscape.
Yundt notes that a previous outpatient facility was located in the basement of an acute-care hospital with no access to natural light, and there was a desire for something different.
