Iowa Health System named a top Sentara Healthcare executive to succeed Samuel Wallace as the Des Moines-based systems president and chief executive officer. Howard Kern, president and chief operating officer of Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara, will join Iowa Health in January.
Wallace, 64, is expected to retire Jan. 1, 2008. Don Ross, chairman of Iowa Health and head of the systems executive search committee, said Wallace will continue as an adviser through March. Iowa Health owns 11 hospitals and manages another 13 facilities in Iowa and Illinois.
Kern, 50, spent 28 years with six-hospital Sentara, becoming COO in 1995 and president seven years later. Ross said Iowa Healths directors sought an executive to head up quality-improvement efforts after a decade of expansion. Were not looking for massive growth, he said. Directors hired Kern for his lengthy experience within healthcare and his extensive knowledge of the industry, Ross said. -- by Melanie Evans
