Leapfrog Group has named 41 hospitals to its 2007 list of top quality and safety performers, while calling for even greater strides in implementing quality and safety practices.
Those hospitals33 adult facilities and eight childrens hospitalshave fully met Leapfrogs standards in intensive-care physician staffing, safe-practices scoring, and in either two or more of the eight evidence-based hospital referral areas or in computerized physician order entry plus one of the eight referral areas. The results are based on 1,285 hospitals that responded by Aug. 31 to the groups annual quality and safety survey.
Among the top hospitals are Alta Bates Summit Medical Center-Summit Campus, Oakland, Calif.; Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, Mass.; Harper-Hutzel Hospital, Detroit; and Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.
All of the respondents report quality and safety standards and comply at least in part with Leapfrogs measurements; however, the 41 top hospitals have set the bar for full compliance, Chief Executive Officer Suzanne Delbanco said during a news conference.
That said, much more improvement is needed to make our hospitals safer, she added.
Only 10% of respondents have fully implemented CPOE, a small increase from 2.5% in 2002, according to Leapfrog. In addition, 29% of respondents with an ICU have hired intensivists, which the employer-based group estimates saves 20,000 lives a year. The number could be higher than 54,000 a year if all urban hospitals with ICUs had intensivists, Delbanco said.
The survey this year underwent changes in quality standards based on new measurements by the National Quality Forum and criteria modifications, which makes comparing the list with last years top performers difficult, Delbanco said. This is the second year Leapfrog compiled its list. -- by Jean DerGurahian
