HealthSouth Corp., Birmingham, Ala., announced the promotion of Christine Bachrach to senior vice president and chief compliance officer earlier this month. Bachrach, 41, has worked in the companys compliance department since March 2004. She succeeds John Markus, 56, who will join the law firm of Balch & Bingham on Sept. 3. Markus said he will be based in Birmingham, but will work in the firms offices in Atlanta and Washington. I came on during the period when the company was in crisis, said Markus, who joined HealthSouth in 2004. My part of it was to improve relationships with federal regulators. I expected that to take three to four years.
Bachrachs experience includes working as a principal at Navigant Consulting, where she specialized in compliance program implementation, investigations and financial operations for healthcare organizations, according to HealthSouth. She has also worked at what was formerly known as Arthur Andersen, and began her career as an internal consultant for Kaiser Permanente, Oakland, Calif. Bachrach earned a bachelors degree in industrial engineering and decision support from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. and has a masters degree in engineering and operations research from the University of California at Berkeley. -- by Jessica Zigmond
