A group of healthcare experts with backgrounds in academia, the private sector, legal affairs and medical journalism have established a U.S.-based organization charged with setting standards for providers and other businesses working in the burgeoning medical-tourism industry.
We are establishing a comprehensive, credible resource for American citizens to access information on medical tourism, identify hospitals and providers and learn about their outcomes, said Jonathan Edelheit, inaugural president of the new not-for-profit Medical Tourism Association, in a new release issued by the West Palm Beach, Fla.-based association. Edelheit is also vice president of OptiMed Health/United Group Programs.
In addition to establishing U.S.-based credentialing standards for hospitals and other companies such as travel groups offering medical-tourism services, the association will also address inquiries about medical-tourism issues from government agencies, legislators, employers and insurers, according to the
release. The group also has plans to publish a medical-tourism magazine and produce a television documentary on the subject.
The association will be supported by membership dues, ranging from $1,000 for hospitals to $500 for affiliated businesses and $250 for physicians. The organizations board members include officials from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Harvard Medical International, Parkway Hospital in Singapore and Hospital Biblica Clinica in Costa Rica. -- by Shawn Rhea
