El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, Calif., has named Eric Pifer, M.D., to the newly created position of chief medical information officer, effective Sept. 4. Pifer, 40, will oversee information technology initiatives for the Silicon Valley hospital, which plans to open a new facility in mid-2009. Pifer's focus will be on improving safety and quality, hospital CEO Ken Graham said in a news release. Pifer is currently chief medical information officer and assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Philadelphia. Since 1998, he has spearheaded the implementation of clinical information systems there.
