Mark Palmer, president and chief executive officer of Western
Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, has resigned effective Aug. 1.
The situation was no longer an ideal fit for me professionally in light
of the organizations need to chart a new strategic course, he said in a
news release. He said he plans to return with his family to
Palmer, 47, joined West Penn Hospital in 2006 from Alvarado Hospital
Medical Center in San Diego. Palmers resignation follows the surprising
departure last week of Jerry Fedele, president and CEO of West Penn
Allegheny Health System, who led the five-hospital system through a $700
million bond refinancing last month.
Fedele, too, resigned over unresolved differences between (Fedele) and
the WPAHS board regarding the strategic direction of the organization,
according to a news release. WPAHS was created out of the 1998 bankruptcy
