McKesson Corp. announced that it has signed an agreement to buy Awarix, a Birmingham, Ala., company founded in 2003 that provides patient-care tracking systems. Terms were not disclosed and the deal is expected to close by the end of the month.
The Awarix system aggregates information from a variety of sources and provides a computer display of a hospital floor plan marking the geographic location of each patient with information on the patient's status plus any pending orders or laboratory results.
Awarix has about 40 employees and 22 customers including Birmingham's 326-bed St. Vincent's Hospital where much of the early building and design of Awarix took place, said McKesson Chief Nursing Officer Billie Waldo.
Waldo said she will be the general manager of the Awarix solution, but she said all of the company's employees and its business operations will remain in Birmingham.
